ENGLAND WALKING FOOTBALL OVER 60s/65s - CELTIC NATIONS TOURNAMENT

Sunday 18th May – The Mumbles, Swansea

On a glorious sunny day at the picturesque seaside setting of The Mumbles in Swansea, the England Walking Football (EWF) teams took to the field with renewed energy and a fresh line-up. Manager Martin Haines and Assistant Manager Billy Morrison led a bold new approach by fielding restructured squads for the over 60s and, for the first time, a dedicated over 65s team.

It was a proud day for the squad, with 12 players making their international debuts, and they did not disappoint.

England Over 60s – Making an Impact

The England 60s started the tournament in style, producing a commanding 5-0 win over Celtic Nations B. Debutant Glenn Page stole the show with a memorable hat-trick in his first appearance for England. Fellow debutant Mark Goodson also got on the scoresheet, and Ian Nicholls added the fifth with a sharp finish.

In their second match, the 60s came up against a strong Celtic Nations A side. Despite dominating large parts of the game, they had to settle for a 1-1 draw after a late penalty was awarded to the home team. Ian Nicholls was again on target, this time with a spectacular goal that was a contender for the best of the day.

England Over 65s – Dominant from Start to Finish

The newly formed England 65s side impressed with two clinical 3-0 victories against both Celtic Nations A and B teams.

Debutant Tim Harris led the charge with a hat-trick, while fellow newcomer Martin Wadeson added another debut goal. Mark Potts and Graham Liddiard also contributed to the scoresheet, highlighting the squad’s strength in depth.

Their consistent performances saw the 65s finish top of their group – a great achievement in their first outing as a separate team.

England vs England – A Friendly Rivalry

In a final friendly fixture between the England 60s and 65s, the younger team came out on top with a 2-0 win, thanks to two more goals from the in-form Glenn Page. It was a fitting end to a successful day for both squads and a light-hearted but competitive battle that showcased the spirit of the sport.

Celebrating the Debutants and Leadership

Congratulations go out to the 12 players who proudly wore the England shirt for the first time:

Gary Fazackery, Glenn Page, Gordon Ribbons, Mark Munday, Mark Goodson, Richard Pike, Tony Williams, Ken Dyas, John Kowalyk, Tim Harris, Martin Wadeson, and Vic Armand.

Special thanks also to Pete Johnson, who admirably stepped up to manage the 65s while Martin and Billy focused on the 60s – a job he handled with great success.

Gratitude and Looking Ahead

A heartfelt thank you goes to the referees, volunteers, and especially our generous Welsh hosts who provided such a warm welcome and helped make the day a resounding success.

This event was not just a victory for England but a celebration of walking football, sportsmanship, and camaraderie across the Celtic Nations.

We now turn our focus to the next international fixture in London on 20 July, with momentum, pride, and unity driving us forward.
