England Walking Football – July Newsletter

A Warm Welcome from the England Walking Football Committee

We are delighted to bring you the July edition of our newsletter, packed with exciting updates from England Walking Football. Our mission remains steadfast: to be a beacon of excellence, setting the standard for inclusivity, professionalism, and community spirit in Walking Football.

July has been an action packed month. June saw our women's section bringing home the silverware with this month, our men's section following suit. The month kickstarted with a training camp at Castle Vale and was followed by several excellent tournaments for both England and St George's, home and abroad. We announced the great news that we will soon be welcoming on board our first England men's 40s team, championing our values surrounding inclusivity. We're continuing to grow and develop, making new friends and connections. The future for England Walking Football is very bright.

πŸ† Champions Alert! – Victory for England Whites 50s and 60s in a special tournament of firsts.

Congratulations to our Men's 50's (whites) and 60's age categories on their victories at the Caribbean Nations Cup in London.

Despite the rain, spirits soared in NW10 on Sunday 20th July as the first international Walking Football Invitational Competition took place at Bridgestone Arena, hosted by Walking Football Caribbean in association with the Jason Roberts Foundation (JRF). Supported by the Premier League and the PFA through the Players Project Pilot, the day brought together over 120 attendees, including teams, volunteers, families, and local community leaders, for a celebration of football’s power to connect generations and cultures.

πŸšΆβ€β™‚οΈ St George's Roundup

July saw plenty of St George's action, home and away.

Captained by Billy Morrison and managed by Keith Batty (guest) a team of predominantly trialists who hadn't played together before entered the Pork Pie tournament in Melton Mowbray. The team were unbeaten all the way to the final against Pollock. A tight game saw the teams draw 0-0 for the second time, culminating in a penalty shootout, that sadly didn't go their way. Congratulations to all of the players on a very impressive performance and for finishing runners up over all. Well done to Pollock!

Over the weekend of 12th and 13th July, St George’s were privileged to be one of the teams in Hungary’s first international walking football tournament in Budapest. With late injuries and withdrawals St George’s travelled with just 7 players for the six a side competition. Particular thanks go to Bill Tiwana, a current England trialist, who joined the squad at very short notice. Over the two days, and in 30 degrees heat, St George’s small squad acquitted themselves excellently with two wins, two draws and one loss.

πŸ’ͺ July Training Round-Up

July was packed with hard work and determination!

Our men and women's teams were able to train together at Castle Vale Stadium in Birmingham, providing a much needed opportunity to catch up with one another, share exciting updates and squeeze in a post training beverage!

Awards were presented at training to the over 60s St Georges Walking Football team who proudly emerged as winners of the Mauro Sadocco XXI Memorial Cup, the Italian Cup 2025.

Caps were awarded to our women's team following their memorable clean sweep at the Tri-Nations and Celtic Nations Cup last month.

πŸŽ‰ A big thank you to all players, coaches, and organisers for creating a memorable month of football and friendship.

πŸŽ‰ Exciting Announcement - 40s Team Coming Soon

We're thrilled to welcome on board joint managers Steve Clifford and Danny Boyes from Unity and Nottingham Forest. They will both be a great addition to our club!

Here's what they have to say:

"We are delighted to have the opportunity in building an over England 40s walking football side. We are grateful to the committee who have placed their faith in us as we look to promote our sport to a fresh and younger audience. This is an interesting development in walking football as we introduce a younger age bracket who can hopefully continue to enjoy a game that we all love. With vets football finishing in your late 30s it is the best time to grab an audience of fresh talent before they throw their boots out and take up other interests. We look forward to the chance to forge a squad to be proud of from all corners of the country and will be attending trials and games with great interest."

πŸ† Award Winners - Congratulations!

Congratulations to our women's Directors Jay Adams and Wendy Benson for their efforts in the development of the Birmingham County FA Women's Waking Football League. The League breaks down barriers and allows women to come together and create their own footballing journey. It aims to address the lack of opportunities these women may have faced previously, and has created a very special, supportive and inclusive environment.

Congratulations to Kate Smith, 40s squad player on winning Cumbria FA coach of the year, with her home team Workington St Josephs. Kate has played an integral role in the development of walking football in her area, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to play the sport we love.
